PORTRAITS OF THE TRINITY
Let us turn our attention this week to a further study in the portrait of the Trinity in Genesis 11:26. In this text we find the controlling portrait of the Trinity. I use the word control to describe His position of being sovereign. Many today say that God is in control and sovereign of all things, but, may I say he is in control of those things as well. Our text will tell us He is in control of salvation. He decides who gets it, when they get it, and how they get it.
In our text I find at the door of the faith world the birth of three boys Abraham, Nahor, and Haran. Abraham is the father of the faith. He is the father of all those that believe. There should be great similarities in what Abraham had and what you and I have. Is it not unusual to find at the door of the faith world the birth of three boys? There is that number three again. It is the number of the triune God-head. The Lord has placed the number three everywhere we look, that we may not forget that there are three of them the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
Let us look first of all this week at the birth of these three. Notice with me in Genesis 11:1 the begetting line. When the world was destroyed by the flood in Noah's day we were left with three boys to replenish the earth. Abraham and his brothers came out of one of those brothers by the name of Shem. The word Shem means the mark of individuality, one of a kind. It is very close to the phrase only begotten. The name means to lift one up high in the sky and place them over all giving them sole authority over all things. It sounds like Shem is one with all the characteristics of being like Christ. In Luke 3:36 we see that not only the line through which Abraham, Nahor, and Haran was the line of Shem, but it is also the line through which Christ the Son of God came.
Let us also look in this text at the begetting lesson. In Genesis 11:12 we find in this section their individual births. You cannot get into this line of the family of God except through a birth, yea the new birth. In Genesis 11:17 we find a collective birth. All of those in the true church made up of the chosen blood washed people of God are there by birth. The Baptist church is joined by choice but God's church can only be inhabited by those who all are born again or born from above.
Let us look at Genesis 11:26 see the begetting light. I noticed in this verse there is only one birth when the Bible says, and Terah lived 70 years and begat. There is one birth and out of that birth there comes triplets Abraham, Nahor, and Haran. So I see we have one birth and three sons born. When I see this truth it sounds to me like the three in one. There is one birth that produces three boys. This is placed right at the door to the faith world. This tells me that the triune God-head exercises control over salvation. As Jonah said from the belly of the whale, salvation is of the Lord. David in his darkest hour in the wilderness Psalm said, salvation is of the Lord. God does exercise control over who gets salvation, when they get salvation, and how they get salvation. To Him be all the glory!
