PORTRAITS OF THE TRINITY
I want to continue our study of the portraits of the Trinity this week. These are the times in the Bible where types or pictures will let us see clearly God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. We started looking at the arks in the Bible last week under the heading of the completing portrait of the Trinity. We are not surprised to find there are three arks in the Bible and they teach us that in Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily and we are complete in Him.
This week let us look to Genesis chapter 6 and Noah’s ark where we find our completeness is seen in the testimony of the ark. In verse 6:14 of Genesis I find a material testimony. We are told that there were only two materials used in the making of this ark. You may say this will mess up your thought of the mark of three everywhere to indicate the Trinity. Let me remind us the number two is for Christ the second person of the Godhead. The first material used in the ark was gopher wood. This is the most durable of wood, very seldom was it known to rot. In order to have this wood a tree must be cut down. In order for us to have the security of Christ our ark, Christ must be cut off from the land of the living, hung on a cross made from a tree. It was also pitched within and without with pitch. The word pitch in the Old Testament meant covering or atonement. In the New Testament it means propitiation or to expiate our sins. When Christ died upon the cross it took away my past, present, and future sins.
In 6:17-22 we find the mission testimony of the ark. For 120 years while building this ark Noah preached but one message, judgment is coming. Everyone turned him a deaf ear. I doubt when God shuts Noah in the ark that he hung a banner across the bow with a big smiley face with the words God loves you. The horrifying thought of maybe 3 billion people going to hell with their clothes on was message enough. The ark was longer than a football field and was in the shape of a casket. If one could see an aerial view it looked like a giant casket across the sea of life. The ark spoke loudly of our death to self.
I noticed also in the testimony of the ark that there is a mysterious testimony. I stand amazed how our Lord has so arranged so many things about this ark. It is just a great mystery. In Genesis 7:13 we find there was 8 souls on board, Noah, his wife, his three sons, and three daughter-in-law. The number eight is always connected with the new birth or new beginning. In John three the new birth chapter, the word birth is mentioned eight times. If one is to be born-again he must be placed safely in the ark of Christ. In Genesis 6:19-20 I noticed that the animals came in 2 by 2. So we see the ark was full of twos which is the number of Christ.
In Genesis 6:16 we find there was three stories in this ark. So all the animals that were in pairs of two were on three levels. The number three is the number for the Godhead. The ark was full of twos which is Christ sitting on three levels which stands for the Godhead. In Christ dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily and we who are in Christ are complete in Him. I am glad I have testimony of being placed in Him before time and He got in me in time.
