PORTRAITS OF THE TRINITY

Let us this week begin some concluding thoughts on the creating portrait of the Trinity before we turn to another of these portraits. We have already looked at the individual, collective, and particular exercise of the Trinity in creation. Let us turn this week to Hebrews chapter 1 and find there an exalting exercise of the trinity

I find in verses 1:1-3 of Hebrews that the Trinity is co-equaled in deity. We find in verse one God the Father is mentioned as speaking in days gone by the prophets. It was the teaching of the Old Testament writer that God was speaking of and using the Old Testament Prophet as His mouth piece. The test of the true prophet was, did what he said come to pass. If it did he was a true prophet and if it didn't then he was a false prophet and worthy to be stoned. The exalting of the Son to be equal with the Father begins to take great shape in verses 2-3. In verse 2a we find the Son is His mouth piece. This is borne out by John in the Gospel when he said, in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the Word was God. We know the word was none other than God incarnate in the person of Jesus, God's mouthpiece for all ages both then, now and to come. I noticed in verse 2b we are told the Son will be heir to everything because He made everything. I thought Genesis 1: 1 said that God created everything. Hebrews now says the Son created all things. The only way there could be no contradiction in this is that both God the Father and Son are one and the same person.

I noticed in verse 3a the Father says of the Son that He is the brightness of God's glory and the express image of God's person. The phrase express image is our word for mirror. God the Son is a perfect mirror of His likeness of the Father. If you see the Son you have seen the Father. I see also in verse 3b that He up holdeth all things by the word of His power. It is here we are once again confronted with the word. He speaks and all things are held up. Paul said that by Him all things consist and are held together. If he ever steps out of the equation of this world it will collapse on every corner. I see in Hebrews 3:3c that He Christ is the one that took away all our sins by the purging work of his blood sacrifice.

I also see in Hebrews 3:8-12 that they are co-equal in declaration. You might say of the text I see God the Father and God the Son, but where is God the Spirit. Do remember the Bible was given by the breath of the Spirit. In verse eight the Spirit is breathing out that declaration of calling the Son, God. The Holy Ghost declares in verse 10 that the Son laid the foundation and the heavens were the work of His hand. The Spirit declares that one day the Son will fold the world up like an old garment and they shall be changed. God the Holy Ghost is surely exalting God the Father and God the Son.

I know not how the Spirit moves convincing men of sin, revealing Jesus through the word, and creating faith in them. But I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Have you experienced the creating work of the Trinity in your own salvation story?
