PORTRAITS OF THE TRINITY

Let us continue our study this week of the times the Bible shows us pictures or portraits of the Trinity. They are God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost who make up the three in one.

We have been looking in Genesis 18:1-3 and the three friends that came to see Abraham under the heading of the compelling portrait of the Trinity. We looked last week at the compelling pronouncement of the Trinity. This week let us look at Genesis 18:22-32 and a compelling prayer for the Trinity. I see in verse 22b there is a mediating prayer. The word mediate is one who stands between God and someone else. Abraham was willing to stand between Lot and the judgment of God. Paul said this in Romans 9:1-3, ‘I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, that I have a great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh’. It is here that Paul voices his willingness to be separated from Christ in Hell for his Jewish brethren. How many of us would be willing to go to Hell for one of their family members? Christ suffered Hell as my Kinsman Redeemer that I His next of kin might go to heaven.

In Genesis 18:23 we find an interceding prayer. If we are to intercede we must have a promise. Abraham laid the promise before the Lord that was found in the book of Job the oldest book in the Bible. The promise was in the form of a question when Abraham asked God, ‘wilt thou destroy the righteous with the wicked’? You would not think after all Lot was found doing that he was a saved man. Peter says in his epistle that God vexed the righteous soul of Lot. In this intercession there was a promise laid before the Lord. Abraham begins at 50 and went down to 10 asking God if He found that many righteous people would He spare Sodom. God said, I will not destroy them if I find 10 in Sodom that is righteous.

I find in Genesis 18:33 Greek there is a communing prayer. The word commune means to speak to one in order to convey a promise. In Genesis 19:1-2 when they arrived in Sodom there is only two of them. The third person of the Godhead is missing. God the Holy Ghost comes to bring life and He does not come to Sodom because they have come to destroy Sodom. In Genesis 18:2, 14, 16, 18, and 24 Lot refers to these two as lords and my Lord. This is the terms of the covenant keeping God. He is the God who will always keep his promise.

My question for us today is why the triune Godhead destroyed Sodom. Is it because of the sodomites? Is it because Lot’s married children mock him? Is it because Lot was a pedophile? Is it because his wife was a halfhearted follower of God? I find that none of these are the reason for God’s destruction of Sodom. God destroyed Sodom because He could not find 10 righteous people praying to hold back His judgment. If the Lord comes to the destroy the little town or community where you live in today will He find 10 righteous people interceding to hold back the judgment of God?
