A Study of Positional Truths
Let us turn again
to the treasure house of our wealth In Christ. Our text is Ephesians
2:8-10 which say, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not
of yourself: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should
boast. For we are His workmanship, created
in Christ Jesus
unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in
Paul tells us that
our great salvation was a gift of God.
This phrase lays the axe to all our pride and self effort. Our
salvation was totally orchestrated and initiated by the Lord. It was
all the Lords doing and none of our effort. The text tells us it was
not of ourselves.
This great salvation is
by grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favor. God’s
Riches At Christ’s Expense.
The channel that brings this salvation is
faith. The faith
that we put in Him is His faith and not ours. Paul says in Philippians,
“And be found in Him not having mine own righteousness which is of the
law, but that which is through the faith of Christ the righteousness
which is of God by faith.” The whole work of salvation from start to
finish is His work, not ours. Grace, faith, and even repentance so says
the book of Acts are a gift of God. (5:31)
He gives this gift
according to the good pleasure of His will. To God be the glory, Great
things He hath done for me. There truly is no boasting to be done by us
in such a great salvation.
In verse 10 we see
the great truth of what we have In Him. Paul tells us we are
workmanship’. This work gives Him all the glory for our
salvation. Workmanship has the idea of a masterpiece of one’s created
handiwork. The word is used of a poem or painting. Our Lord is
purposely writing a rhyme of words with the history of our life. He is
telling His story with our history. He is taking our lives and painting
a masterpiece that will look like Him when done.
‘created in Christ Jesus’
is a further defining of workmanship. The word created has the
idea of a new creation. Paul said ‘If any man be in Christ, he is a new
creation’. The text tells us that we were not just created and left to
wander, but we were created unto
good works. These
good works are the object of our salvation, not the cause. These good
works were fore ordained.
God prearranged, once saved, the plan for our walk and order of
He chose us for
salvation, gave us the gift of salvation, and planned out the path of
our good works. He chose all that would bring to us the most good and
to Himself the greatest glory. Thank you Lord for making me your
created workmanship in Christ Jesus.
